Response to Priyana’s Question #3 - By:Akunna Nwaogu
I found it interesting that so few people attended Gatsby’s funeral because when you look at his life it seems as if he is always surrounded by people. The people who went to Gatsby’s parties only went for the excitement, drinks, food, and the famous people. Not one of them actually sought out to meet Gatsby other than Nick. These people were clearly not true friends of Jay unless they would have certainly attended his funeral.
It is possible that some of the party-goers genuinely could not come to his funeral, but it is unbelievable that not one showed up. I think that they didn’t want to be associated with Gatsby anymore because everyone thinks that he killed Myrtle. Gatsby’s “friends” were unloyal people and when thing got tough they jumped off the boat and pretended not to know him.
It’s hard to believe that hundreds of people attended Gatsby’s parties throughout the summer, they ate his food, dance in his house, and swam in his pool, and yet none of them had the audacity to pay him some respect at his funeral. These people are cowards are they probably had selfish reasons for disregarding the funeral, which is quite sad but also a relief. It is sad because Gatsby that he had a bunch of people supporting him, but really there were only a few true people in his life. It is a relief because the reader got to see who Gatsby’s real friends are.
Response to Bushra's Question #1- By: Priyana Jeyanathan
Daisy and Tom's relationship was not as great as Daisy and Gatsby's relationship. Gatsby was a charming, sweet, intelligent, and loving man. These are characteristics that I didn't see in Tom. Tom is a lying, cheating, rude man who is no good for anyone. On the other hand, Gatsby was a sweet guy who would do anything to receive the love and affection that he wanted from Daisy. The most romantic thing about Gatsby is that he would never give up on the love that he had for Daisy.
I believe that Daisy was really foolish and also selfish for choosing Tom instead of Gatsby. Why go spend the rest of your life with a man who lies in the relationship than to be with a man who loves you more than anything in the world? To conclude, if I were Daisy, I wouldn't be in a relationship with a guy like Tom. In my opinion, their relationship was very worthless and full of lies and hatred mixed together as a whole.
Response to Priyana's Question #2 By: Bushra
Even though Daisy and Gatsby had this bond for each other for years even after Daisy married Tom, she still chose Tom over Gatsby because Gatsby is a source for Daisy to get what she wants and take advantage of his wealth and status in West egg. Although Gatsby has actually loved Daisy for years and is willing to give anything to her. What he has with Daisy can't compare even to the lack of loyalty Daisy and Tom had. After all those arguments at the end of the day they always come together and Tom even admits himself that behind all the stupid decisions they have made he has always loved Daisy. The bond that Gatsby and Daisy has revolves around materialistic objects and knowing Daisy's character she wouldn't even take a second glance at Gatsby if he didn't have this high standard and wealth. What Tom and Daisy have doesn't bond around wealth or items.
