Chps 2-4: Discussion Questions - By: Akunna Nwaogu
1. Describe some of the new insights the reader has been exposed to about Nick Carraway in chapter two.Would you consider him to be different or similar to the other characters you have been introduced to so far?
2. Refer back to the first time Nick meet Gatsby and describe their meeting. Did you expect something similar to this to happen? If not, what was your prediction of their introduction to each other? Is Gatsby as what you imagined him to be?
3. After Jordan tells the story of Daisy’s marriage, in chapter 4, the reader gets a new understanding of Daisy’s character. What did you learn about Daisy through Jordan’s story?
4. Nick says this line in chapter 4: “ There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired.” Inference what he meant by this by using your knowledge about the people Nick comes across during his summer in Long Island. What characters can this quote relate to? How?
5. In chapter 3, Nick claims that he is one of the few honest people he knows. Do you believe his statement is true? Why or why not? Consider how he responds to the lifestyle of his peers and the secrets that he is told.

4. In the beginning of chapter 8, Nick describes his frightening dreams. What mood does this introduction give for the chapter? Does it foreshadow anything that might happen to any characters in the book?
5. In the beginning of the book, Gatsby seemed very mysterious. Now that the book is coming to an end, what quote from chapter 8 reveals a lot of Gatsby's character? Explain.

1. As Tom throughout the story is a pretty monotone serious guy until he's confronted the truth about Gatsby and Daisy's love for each other. Would you if you were Daisy in that situation when Tom said he still loved her would you take his word considering the so many lows you both went through?
2. Jordan has been through so much that has happened considering she doesn't really do anything when Gatsby and Tom are fighting or even when Gatsby and Daisy get into that car accident when coming back from New York. Do you believe that Fitzgerald put her in the story for a sole purpose that she may jump into the story with a lot of power, or to represent someone? For example a bystander etc.
3. Refer back to when Gatsby confessed his love for Daisy right to Tom's face even adding in how she never loved Tom, what big character changes do you see in Tom's actions and words as he is shocked and in denial about what he has heard?
4. Gatsby has already done so much for Daisy just to get her to leave Tom, even staying outside her house for the night just to make sure she's safe. At that point do you think Gatsby knew himself that he was completely whip lashed for this women because he loved her so much but deep down it wounded his ego how weak he was for her even the slightest bit?
5. When Daisy had admitted that she indeed can't say she hasn't loved Tom at all, explain what you think their love consisted of before knowing the fact that Tom isn't rich at all so something else drove their love for each other together, if it wasn't wealth what was it for Daisy to love a man such as Tom?
